Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit 2026: Salary, Eligibility and Fees

Software engineer at a laptop with a Dublin riverside view - Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit 2026

Ireland is one of the few European countries that lets skilled workers bring their family quickly and aim for permanent residence. The route for most Indian engineers and IT professionals is the Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit. This guide explains the 2026 salary thresholds, who is eligible, what the permit costs, how long you must stay with your employer and what your family can do.

Quick answer

  • The Critical Skills Employment Permit needs a job offer of at least 2 years from an employer based and trading in Ireland. For shorter offers, a General Employment Permit is the alternative.
  • Minimum pay: EUR 40,904 for occupations on the Critical Skills Occupations List (degree needed), EUR 36,848 for a recent graduate (qualification within the last 12 months), and over EUR 68,911 for other eligible occupations.
  • No Labour Market Needs Test is required for critical skills occupations.
  • Fee: EUR 1,000, with 90% refunded if the application is unsuccessful.
  • Family can seek immediate reunification, and a spouse or partner can apply for a Dependant/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit, currently issued free of charge.

What is the Critical Skills Employment Permit?

The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment describes the permit as designed to attract highly skilled people into the labour market, with the aim of encouraging them to take up permanent residence in Ireland. It replaced the Green Card permit. Eligible occupations – such as ICT professionals, professional engineers and technologists – are those considered critically important to growing Ireland’s economy and in significant shortage, as set out in the Critical Skills Occupations List.

Salary thresholds for 2026

CategoryMinimum annual remunerationOther conditions
Occupation on the Critical Skills Occupations ListEUR 40,904A relevant degree or higher is required
Same occupations, qualification received within the 12 months before applyingEUR 36,848A recent graduate
Any other occupation that is not on the Ineligible Occupations ListOver EUR 68,911Without a degree you need the necessary level of experience
Public sector roles covered by a pay agreementThe rate of pay under that agreementIncludes Section 38 employers

Remuneration is made up of components the Department specifies: it starts with a basic salary that at least meets the minimum wage or a legally fixed rate, and certain other payments such as some health insurance payments can count. Bonuses are excluded from the annual figure on the application, so check your contract against the Department’s remuneration criteria.

Eligibility checklist

  • A job offer of at least 2 years in an eligible occupation from a bona fide employer registered with the Revenue Commissioners (and, where applicable, the Companies Registration Office).
  • You have the qualifications, skills and experience the job requires.
  • The employer meets the 50% EEA rule: permits are not granted unless at least 50% of the employees are EEA nationals when applying. This can be waived for start-ups within 2 years of establishment that are supported by Enterprise Ireland or IDA Ireland.
  • Your occupation is on the Critical Skills Occupations List (or your pay is over EUR 68,911 for other eligible roles).
  • For nurses and midwives, you need a third-level degree or diploma accepted by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland as sufficient for registration to practise.

Who can apply, and how long does the permit last?

Either the prospective employee or the employer can apply. The permit is issued to the employee, with a certified copy to the employer, and allows you to work for the named employer, in the named occupation and at the named location. The job offer must be for at least 2 years.

The 9-month rule

You are expected to stay with the first employer for at least 9 months. A new permit for a different employer cannot be considered if less than 9 months have passed since you started work on a permit. Exceptions can apply if you are made redundant or if circumstances you could not have foreseen fundamentally change the employment relationship.

Fees and processing

  • Processing fee: EUR 1,000. If an application is unsuccessful, 90% of the fee is refunded.
  • The fee may be paid by a third party, but refunds go to the applicant.
  • Applications are processed in date order by employer type. If the processor asks for extra information, send it within 28 days.
  • If an application is refused, a review can be requested within the Department’s deadline.

Family, residence and what happens after the permit

  • Critical Skills permit holders can apply for immediate family reunification through the Immigration Service Delivery of the Department of Justice.
  • A spouse or partner who is resident in Ireland can seek any employment and apply for a Dependant/Partner/Spouse Employment Permit, which is currently issued free of charge.
  • At the end of the permit’s duration, holders can apply to the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service for permission to reside and work without an employment permit.

  5. Receive the permit and start work with the named employer; keep the 9-month rule in mind.

Checklist before you accept an Irish job offer

  • Is the contract for at least 2 years? A shorter offer can only support a General Employment Permit.
  • Is your job title on the Critical Skills Occupations List, and do you hold the relevant degree?
  • Does the annual remuneration excluding bonuses reach EUR 40,904 (or EUR 36,848 for a recent graduate, or over EUR 68,911 for other eligible roles)?
  • Is the employer registered with the Revenue Commissioners, and does it meet the 50% EEA employees rule (or an Enterprise Ireland / IDA Ireland start-up exemption)?
  • Is the job description in your contract the same as on the application – occupation, location and start date?

Common mistakes with the Ireland Critical Skills Employment Permit

  • Counting bonuses towards the threshold. The application asks for annual remuneration excluding bonuses.
  • Accepting a 12-month contract and expecting a Critical Skills permit.
  • Choosing a role that is not on the list and paying below the EUR 68,911 route.
  • Changing jobs too early. A new permit for a different employer cannot be considered within 9 months of starting.
  • Forgetting to return the permit. If employment ends while the permit is valid, the permit must be returned to the Department within 4 weeks of termination.
