Ireland is the only English-speaking common law country remaining in the European Union, which is the whole argument in one sentence. For Indian professionals it means an EU base without a language barrier, and for employers it is why so many technology, pharmaceutical and financial multinationals run their European operations from Dublin, Cork and Galway.
| Route | What it is | Who it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Critical Skills Employment Permit | For occupations on the critical skills list | Skilled professionals with an offer above the salary threshold |
| General Employment Permit | For roles not on the critical skills list | Applicants whose occupation is not ineligible, with a labour market test |
| Study permission | A degree or higher diploma at an approved institution | Students, with graduate permission afterwards |
| Dependant permissions | For family of permit holders | Spouses of Critical Skills holders can often work without a separate permit |
| Short stay visa | Tourism, family visits and business | Covered by our Ireland tourist visa service |
This is the strongest route Ireland offers and it is worth understanding why. It carries no labour market test where the occupation is on the critical skills list, the spouse can usually work without their own permit, and it leads to long-term residence faster than the general permit. What it requires is an offer meeting the salary threshold for that list, from an employer registered with the Irish authorities. The occupation lists are revised, so the first thing to check is whether yours is on the current one.
For applicants who do not yet have an offer, study is the realistic way in: an Irish qualification, then the Third Level Graduate Programme, then an employment permit. The condition that matters is tuition – for most programmes Ireland requires the fee to be paid in full before the visa application, which changes the cash flow of the whole plan. Our study in Ireland service covers that route in detail.
Ireland is not a cheap country to live in, and Dublin in particular is expensive. What it does not have is a large up-front immigration charge, which changes the arithmetic at the point of applying.
| Item | Who pays | When |
|---|---|---|
| Employment permit fee | Employer or applicant, by arrangement | Before the visa application |
| Entry visa fee | You | With the visa application |
| Immigration registration | You | After arrival, on registering |
| Private medical insurance | You | Before travel, for students and some permissions |
| Tuition, on the study route | You | In full, before the visa application for most programmes |
| Our professional fee | You | Staged, separate from every charge above |
Cost of living varies sharply by city. Cork, Galway and Limerick are materially cheaper than Dublin, and several of the large employers have offices in all of them – which is worth factoring in before accepting the first offer that arrives.
This is where the Critical Skills permit separates itself most clearly. Holders can generally bring a spouse or partner and dependent children, and the spouse can usually work without obtaining a permit of their own – which for a two-income household changes the calculation entirely. General Employment Permit holders face a longer wait before family reunification and a different position on spousal work rights. If family is part of the plan, this difference is worth more than the salary gap between two offers.
These two are almost always compared, and the answer turns on which factor binds you rather than on which country is better.
| Ireland | UK | |
|---|---|---|
| EU access | Yes | No |
| Main work route | Employment permit, then the visa | Skilled Worker, sponsor-led |
| Job seeker entry | Not available | Not available |
| Spouse work rights | Usually automatic on Critical Skills | Permitted for Skilled Worker dependants |
| Graduate stay | Third Level Graduate Programme | Graduate route |
| Up-front health charge | No equivalent | Immigration Health Surcharge, paid in full at application |
The absence of an up-front health surcharge makes Ireland materially cheaper at the point of application, particularly for a family. The UK offers a far wider choice of institutions and employers. Neither answer is universal – it depends which of those two matters more to you.
For the employment permit routes, yes. Ireland does not run a job seeker visa comparable to Germany or Portugal, so the alternative entry route is study.
Spouses and partners of Critical Skills Employment Permit holders can generally work without obtaining a separate permit. The position differs for General Employment Permit holders.
Long-term residence follows a qualifying period of lawful residence, and Critical Skills holders reach it sooner than General Permit holders. Citizenship requires a further period after that.
