Germany Work Visa for Indians 2026: EU Blue Card and Skilled Worker Routes

Quadriga on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin - Germany work visa for Indians 2026

Germany is short of skilled workers, and Indian engineers, IT professionals, nurses and technicians are some of the people it is hiring. This Germany work visa for Indians guide starts with a simple fact: “Germany work visa” is not a single visa: the right route depends on whether you have a university degree or a vocational qualification, how much the job pays, and whether your qualification is recognised in Germany. This guide explains the two main national visa routes for employment, the documents the German Embassy asks for and the mistakes that cause refusals.

Quick answer

  • University degree + job offer: the EU Blue Card (Section 18g). The German Embassy’s May 2026 checklist lists a minimum gross salary of EUR 50,700 a year and a lower EUR 45,934.20 for shortage professions, recent graduates and IT specialists.
  • IT specialists without a degree can qualify with at least 3 years of comparable IT experience and the lower salary threshold.
  • Vocational qualification + job offer: a skilled worker visa under Section 18a, which needs written recognition of your qualification in Germany.
  • No job offer yet? Look at the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) to search for a job in Germany.
  • Salary thresholds are reset every year, so confirm the figure that applies on your application date.

EU Blue Card: the main route for graduates

As a skilled worker with a university degree recognised in Germany, you can get an EU Blue Card if your job matches your qualifications and you have an employment contract that meets the salary threshold. The employment period must be at least six months.

Salary thresholds

CategoryMinimum gross salary per year (as listed on the May 2026 embassy checklist)
Standard EU Blue CardEUR 50,700
Shortage professions, new entrants (graduated within the last 3 years) and IT specialistsEUR 45,934.20

The German Federal Ministry of the Interior sets the minimum salary once a year, so the number can change in January. Always confirm the threshold with your employer’s contract and the embassy that handles your application.

IT specialists without a degree

The Blue Card also covers IT specialists with at least three years of comparable professional experience in the IT field. You need to prove that experience, and the lower salary threshold above applies.

Recognition of your degree

  • Print the entry for your qualification and your institution from the anabin database. The qualification should be assessed as “entspricht” (comparable) or “gleichwertig” (equivalent), and the institution classified as “H+”.
  • If it is not, get a Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).
  • For regulated professions such as doctors and engineers (where permission is needed to practise), you also need the permission to exercise the profession, or an assurance of it, from the responsible authority.

Skilled worker visa with a vocational qualification (Section 18a)

If you hold a vocational training qualification, you can be issued a residence permit to work in skilled employment. Note that some foreign university degrees are classified as vocational qualifications in Germany, so the right route depends on how your qualification is assessed.

  • A written recognition notice from the agency responsible for recognising foreign vocational training in Germany (or permission to practise for regulated professions such as care and medical occupations).
  • Proof of qualification: diplomas, certificates, work logs with translations, and proof of completion.
  • If you are 45 or older: either a salary of at least 55% of the annual contribution assessment ceiling of the general pension insurance (EUR 55,770 gross a year in 2026) or proof of adequate provision for old age.

Documents for a German work visa

The German Embassy’s national visa checklists for employment list these documents (always use the checklist from the mission that handles your application, because details differ):

  • A completed and signed visa application and declaration, and a recent biometric passport photo.
  • A passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your intended stay, with at least 2 blank pages, issued within the past 10 years.
  • A declaration of employment completed and signed by your employer.
  • Your qualification and its recognition proof (as above).
  • Health insurance valid from entry into the Schengen area. If you enter before your statutory insurance starts, you need travel health insurance covering the Schengen area with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000.

Step-by-step: from job offer to visa

  1. Check your route – degree (Blue Card) or vocational qualification (Section 18a).
  2. Get your qualification assessed – anabin printout, ZAB statement or recognition notice, depending on your case.
  3. Find a job that matches your qualification and meets the salary threshold. Our list of German companies that sponsor work visas for Indians is a good starting point.
  4. Sign the employment contract and get your employer’s declaration of employment.
  5. Prepare the checklist and book your visa appointment with the German mission.
  6. Arrive and register – in Germany the local foreigners office issues the residence document.

Common mistakes that lead to refusals

  • Skipping recognition. An unrecognised degree or an institution that is not “H+” in anabin is a frequent problem.
  • A salary below the threshold – the number on the contract must meet the threshold for your category on the application date.
  • A job that does not match your qualification.
  • Incomplete documents. The checklist warns that incomplete documentation may result in rejection.
  • Wrong insurance for the period before your German statutory cover starts.

Frequently asked questions

What salary do I need for a Germany Blue Card?

The German Embassy’s May 2026 checklist lists EUR 50,700 gross per year for the standard Blue Card and EUR 45,934.20 for shortage professions, recent graduates and IT specialists. The Interior Ministry sets the amounts once a year, so confirm the current figure.

Can I get a Germany work visa without a degree?

Yes, in two cases: IT specialists with at least three years of comparable experience can use the Blue Card route, and people with a recognised vocational qualification can apply under Section 18a.

Do I need to speak German for a work visa?

The embassy checklists we reviewed do not list a German language certificate as a document for these two routes, but your employer or profession (for example care or medical roles) may require German. Check the requirements for your occupation.

What if my degree is not recognised in Germany?

Use the anabin database to check it, and if it is not rated comparable or the institution is not “H+”, apply for a Statement of Comparability from the ZAB. Regulated professions also need permission to practise.

I do not have a job offer yet. What can I do?

Consider the Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte), which lets qualified applicants come to Germany to look for work. See our Opportunity Card guides for the points system.
