Germany Ausbildung Visa for Indians: Requirements, German Level and Documents

Indian trainee learning from a German mentor at a mechatronics workbench - Germany Ausbildung visa for Indians

Germany’s dual vocational training system – the Ausbildung – pays you while you learn a skilled trade or profession, and it is one of the routes Indian students and young professionals ask about most. The Germany Ausbildung visa for Indians is a national visa under Section 16a of the Residence Act. This guide explains what the German missions ask for – the training contract, German language level, financing and documents – and where requirements differ between checklists, so you do not rely on an outdated figure.

Quick answer

  • You need a training place with a German company and a signed training contract.
  • German: B1 for qualified vocational training; otherwise, as a rule, at least A2. If your German is weaker you can take a preparatory language course first.
  • The German Mission in India’s checklist asks for the training contract, training plan, motivation letter, CV, school certificate and proof of German, plus health insurance from the employer.
  • If the training pay is below the threshold on the checklist, the financing gap must be closed with a blocked account or a sponsor’s Verpflichtungserklärung.
  • Financial figures differ between checklists and dates. Always use the latest checklist from the mission that handles your application.

What is the Germany Ausbildung visa for Indians?

The Federal Foreign Office describes the visa for vocational training (Section 16a Residence Act) as a national visa for people who want to do in-company vocational training in Germany. You can do vocational training in Germany if you have a training place in a company and German language skills.

German language requirement

Training typeLanguage level the Federal Foreign Office mentions
Qualified vocational trainingAt least B1
Other trainingAs a rule at least A2
Less German than requiredYou can attend a preparatory language course before the training starts

The India checklist accepts a German language certificate of at least B1, or a confirmation from the school or employer that your language skills were checked and found sufficient, or confirmation of a preparatory language class. Check which of these your mission accepts.

Pro tip

Documents for an Ausbildung visa from India

The German Mission in India’s checklist asks for two copies of each item:

  • A valid passport (issued within the last 10 years, with at least 12 months of validity left) and a copy of its data page.
  • Passport photographs according to biometric specifications.
  • A motivation letter.
  • The training contract (Ausbildungsvertrag) signed by the German employer and the trainee, with IHK recognition if applicable.
  • The training plan (Ausbildungsplan).
  • A personal CV with your full education and employment history, and your academic or school-leaving certificate.
  • A German language certificate (at least B1) or the confirmations described above.
  • A certificate of compulsory health insurance from the German employer valid from the date of employment, plus travel health insurance for the time between arrival and the start of employment if it is not already included.
  • Pre-approval from the Federal Employment Agency – not mandatory, but the checklist says it can shorten processing significantly.

Watch out

That India checklist is marked “as of September 2022”. Other German missions publish newer checklists with different figures. Download the current checklist from the Consular Services Portal and the mission website before you pay for translations or appointments.

Financing: what the checklists say

Financial rules are the part that changes most between missions and dates:

SourceWhat it says about money
German Mission in India checklist (September 2022)If training done entirely in school facilities pays less than EUR 832, or in-company training with vocational school pays less than EUR 939, the gap must be closed with a blocked account or a sponsor’s Verpflichtungserklärung.
A Federal Foreign Office embassy page dated July 2023Proof of EUR 855 net / EUR 1,090 gross per month for the first year; shortfalls (for an unpaid language course or lower pay) shown separately, for example with a blocked account.

Because the numbers differ, treat these as examples of how financing is checked, not as current figures. For how a blocked account works, read our Germany blocked account 2026 guide.

Step-by-step: from training offer to visa

  1. Find a training place with a German company and agree the training contract and training plan.
  2. Check your German level and plan a language course if you need one.
  3. Ask the employer about Federal Employment Agency pre-approval, which can speed up processing.
  4. Collect documents from the current checklist, with certified translations where needed.
  5. Book your visa appointment with the German mission and submit a complete file.
  6. Plan insurance and finances for arrival, then book travel only after the visa is issued.

Common Ausbildung visa mistakes

  • Using an old checklist or an agent’s outdated money figure.
  • Skipping the language certificate or relying on a certificate the mission does not accept.
  • A training contract that is not signed by both sides or missing the training plan.
  • Missing financing proof when the trainee wage is below the checklist threshold.
  • Forgetting travel health insurance for the period before statutory cover starts.

How the training is organised

The India checklist distinguishes training done entirely in school facilities from in-company training combined with a vocational school (Berufsschule). In the dual model you work and learn in the company and attend vocational school alongside it, and you are paid a training wage. The training contract and training plan describe exactly how your training is organised, which is why the mission asks for both.

Translations, certificates and timing

  • Documents that are not in German or English must be submitted with a certified German translation.
  • Certificates and diplomas are generally presented in the original with apostille or legalization, according to the Federal Foreign Office page we checked.
  • As a rule, applications are approved by the competent foreigners authority or the Federal Employment Agency in Germany before the visa is issued.
  • The Federal Foreign Office page for one mission states processing takes approximately 4 weeks but can be longer, and a visa fee of EUR 75 at that mission. Check the fee and timing for your own mission.
  • Do not book flights until you have received the visa.

Preparing for a preparatory German course

If your German is below the required level, a preparatory intensive language course is accepted as a route by the checklists: the India checklist lists confirmation of a preparatory language class as an alternative to the B1 certificate. Ask your employer or training provider whether they will confirm your place before you book a language course.

Frequently asked questions

What German level do I need for an Ausbildung visa?

The Federal Foreign Office says at least B1 for qualified vocational training and, as a rule, at least A2 otherwise. If your German is weaker you can attend a preparatory language course before the training starts.

Do I need a training contract before I apply?

Yes. The checklists ask for the training contract signed by the German employer and the trainee, together with a training plan.

Is a blocked account compulsory for the Ausbildung visa?

Not always. The India checklist says that if the training pay is below its threshold, the financing gap must be closed with a blocked account or a sponsor’s Verpflichtungserklärung.

Does the Federal Employment Agency need to approve my training?

The India checklist says pre-approval by the Federal Employment Agency is not mandatory but can shorten the processing time significantly.

Where do I find the latest checklist?

On the website of the German mission that handles your application and in the Consular Services Portal. Check the date printed on the checklist.
