The TOEFL iBT changed in January 2026: the test is shorter, Reading and Listening are now adaptive, and scores are reported on a new 1 to 6 scale. Much of the preparation material in circulation still teaches the old test. From January 2026 the TOEFL iBT is shorter (about 1.5 hours), Reading and Listening are adaptive, and scores use a 1 to 6 scale. During 2026-2028 score reports also show the old 0-120 equivalent.

Is TOEFL accepted for Canada PR?

No. For Canada PR, IRCC accepts IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core for English. TOEFL is used for university admission.

How soon do TOEFL results come?

Usually within 72 hours of the test.

TOEFL or IELTS for US universities?

Most US universities accept both. TOEFL is the more familiar test for US admissions offices, so it is often the safer choice – but always check your university.
