Express Entry is not one test. There is a set of requirements that decides whether you may enter the pool at all, and a separate score that decides whether you are ever invited out of it. Clearing the first and never clearing the second is the most common way applicants lose a year.

References that merely confirm you were employed prove nothing about the skill level, and the skill level is what the whole claim rests on. Ask for the letter in the form IRCC expects while you still work there.

The Federal Skilled Worker programme is the only one with its own points grid on top of the CRS, and applicants routinely mistake one for the other. Our FSW page sets that grid out; the Canadian Experience Class page covers the route for graduates already in Canada.
Any qualification earned outside Canada has to be assessed by a designated organisation before it can be claimed for points. It takes weeks rather than days, it is required for Federal Skilled Worker and optional but usually worthwhile for the others, and no points are awarded until the report is in hand. Order it first, not last – it is the item most likely to delay an otherwise ready profile.

This is the part worth being blunt about. A profile that satisfies every requirement above enters the pool and may still never be invited, because invitation depends on your CRS against each round. If your score sits well below recent cut-offs, the useful next step is raising it – a higher language band, a provincial nomination, or qualifying for a category-based draw – rather than lodging and waiting.

No. None of the three programmes requires one, though a qualifying offer can add points and is one route to satisfying the Federal Skilled Trades requirements.
The language result and the credential assessment each have a validity period, and both must be current when you submit the profile and again when you apply after an invitation. A test taken very early can quietly expire in between.
