Australia Parent Visa 2026: Subclass 870, 103 and 143 Compared (Cost and Wait)

Perth city skyline - Australia parent visa 103, 143 and 870 guide

If your child is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, bringing your parents to live with you is possible – but it is one of the most expensive and slowest migration routes in the world. The Australia parent visa options come in a temporary and a permanent version, with very different costs and waiting times. This guide compares subclasses 870, 103 and 143 and explains how to choose.

Quick answer

  • Subclass 870 (Sponsored Parent, temporary): stay up to 3 or 5 years per visa, up to a maximum of 10 years in total. Cost: AUD 6,370 (3 years) or AUD 12,440 (5 years). Parents cannot work.
  • Subclass 103 (Parent, permanent): from AUD 8,665 over 2 instalments, but very long waiting times because the visa is capped and queued.
  • Subclass 143 (Contributory Parent, permanent): from AUD 49,900 over 2 instalments – a much higher charge. Both permanent visas are capped and queued, so check the official queue release dates for each.
  • All three need a child who is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • You cannot apply for a 103 or 143 visa if you already hold or have applied for a 870 visa.

Costs are the amounts shown on the Home Affairs visa pages for a single applicant; there are additional charges for each family member, and concessions apply in limited circumstances. You may also pay for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.

Subclass 870: the temporary route

The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa lets a parent of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years, with further visas possible up to a total of 10 years in Australia. Parents cannot work. To apply you need:

  • an approved Parent Sponsor before you can lodge the visa application;
  • to lodge the application online;
  • to lodge within 6 months of the sponsorship approval (60 days if you have permission to apply in Australia, which is approved only in limited circumstances).

Subclass 103 and 143: the permanent routes

Both permanent visas let your parents stay indefinitely, work and study, enrol in Medicare, travel to and from Australia for 5 years, attend free English classes through the Adult Migrant English Program if eligible, and apply for Australian citizenship if eligible. Applications for subclasses 103, 143, 804 and 864 must now be lodged online through ImmiAccount.

Why the waiting time is so long

Home Affairs states that demand for parent visas is greater than the number of places available each year. Applications are subject to capping and queueing and are processed in the order they are received, so there are long processing times. Check the official parent visa queue release dates for the latest picture – and do not rely on anyone who quotes a fixed waiting time.

The two-step Contributory Parent route (subclass 173 then 143)

You can apply for the 143 visa as a two-step process by first applying for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) subclass 173 visa. Home Affairs says this lets you spread the cost over several years. A 173 holder has already met the balance of family test and must apply for the 143 visa before the 173 visa expires.

Key eligibility points for the permanent visas

  • You must have an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • You must meet the balance of family test (not required if you apply as a retiree under the Retirement visa pathway). Check the test on the Home Affairs page.
  • You must be able to obtain an Assurance of Support, which guarantees you will not rely on government assistance after you arrive. It can be provided by an individual, several people or an organisation, and the sponsor or a family member does not have to be the one who gives it.
  • You must not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) subclass 870 visa when you apply.

How to choose between 870, 103 and 143

If your priority is…Consider
Getting your parents to Australia as soon as possible, without work rightsSubclass 870 (temporary) or a visitor visa for shorter stays
The lowest government charge and you can wait many yearsSubclass 103
A permanent visa and you can pay the much higher chargeSubclass 143, possibly through the two-step 173 route
Spreading the cost over timeThe 173 then 143 route

Watch out

Because you cannot lodge a 103 or 143 application while holding a 870 visa, think about the long-term plan before you apply for the temporary visa.

Checklist before you start

  • Confirm that your child is a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
  • Decide whether your family wants a temporary stay (870) or a permanent move (103 or 143).
  • For subclass 870, get the Parent Sponsor approved first, then lodge the visa application within 6 months of approval.
  • For subclass 103 or 143, review the balance of family test and plan for the Assurance of Support.
  • Budget for the visa charge, which for permanent visas is paid in two instalments, and for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.

Common mistakes with parent visas

  • Applying for a 870 visa without planning for 103 or 143. Holding or applying for a 870 stops you applying for the permanent visas at the same time.
  • Missing the 6-month lodgement window after the sponsor is approved for subclass 870.
  • Trusting a promised waiting time. Parent visas are capped and queued; only the official queue release dates are reliable.
  • Ignoring the Assurance of Support for the permanent visas.
  • Using out-of-date fee information. Charges change and are listed on the visa pages and the Visa Pricing Estimator.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an Australian parent visa cost?

According to Home Affairs, the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa costs AUD 6,370 for up to 3 years or AUD 12,440 for up to 5 years. The Parent visa (subclass 103) is from AUD 8,665 and the Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143) is from AUD 49,900, each paid over 2 instalments for a single applicant.

Can my parents work in Australia on a 870 visa?

No. The Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa does not allow work. The permanent parent visas allow work and study.

How long is the wait for a parent visa?

Long. Demand is greater than the number of places each year, so applications are capped and queued and processed in the order received. Check the Home Affairs parent visa queue release dates for the subclass you are considering.

Can my parents apply for a 143 visa while on a 870 visa?

No. You must not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa when you apply for the 103 or 143 visa.

Do I need to give an Assurance of Support?

For the permanent parent visas, yes – unless the parent applies as a retiree under the Retirement visa pathway. Home Affairs will tell you when it is needed.
