Australia Graduate Visa 485 for Indian Students 2026: Stay, Cost and English Scores

Flinders Street Station in Melbourne - Australia Temporary Graduate visa 485 guide for Indian students

Finishing a degree in Australia does not mean you have to leave. The Graduate visa 485 – officially the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) – lets international students stay, work and look for a job after they graduate – and Indian students get a longer stay than most other nationalities under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA). This guide covers who can apply, how long you can stay, the cost and the English scores required in 2026.

Quick answer

  • The Post-Higher Education Work stream is for graduates of an Australian degree; the Post-Vocational Education Work stream is for diplomas, associate degrees and trade qualifications on the skilled occupation list.
  • You must be 35 or under (exceptions apply), be in Australia when you apply, have held a student visa in the last 6 months and hold a recent qualification from a CRICOS-registered course.
  • Visa cost: from AUD 5,750. Indian graduates can stay 2 to 4 years under AI-ECTA depending on the qualification.
  • English (tests taken on or after 7 August 2025): IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each skill, or PTE Academic 55 overall.

Basic eligibility for the 485 visa

  • Age: 35 or under when you apply (exceptions apply).
  • Location: you must be in Australia when you apply.
  • Visa history: you hold an eligible visa and held a student visa in the last 6 months.
  • Qualification: a recent degree (or the stream-specific qualification) from a CRICOS-registered course.
  • Health insurance: evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants when you apply.
  • Character: proof that you have applied for an Australian Federal Police (AFP) check. Apply no earlier than 12 months before and no later than the day before you lodge the visa application – not on the same day.
  • English: evidence of the required level of English with your application.

How long can an Indian graduate stay?

Under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA), Indian nationals get longer stays than the standard 485 rules:

QualificationStandard stayIndian nationals (AI-ECTA)
Bachelor degree (including honours)2 years2 years
Bachelor degree with first-class honours in STEM (including ICT)2 years3 years
Master’s (coursework and extended)2 years3 years
Master’s (research)3 years3 years
Doctoral degree (PhD)3 years4 years

The visa starts on the grant date and is granted with multiple entries, so you can travel out and back while it is valid. Time spent outside Australia does not extend the visa.

English language requirement

For tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, these are the minimum results for the Post-Higher Education Work stream:

TestOverallListeningReadingWritingSpeaking
IELTS (Academic or General Training)6.55.55.55.55.5
PTE Academic5540424139
TOEFL iBT8112121417

Home Affairs accepts IELTS results that include One Skill Retake, as long as the retake is completed before you lodge the application. Prepare with our IELTS coaching or PTE coaching in Hyderabad.

Working and living on a 485 visa

  • You can live, work and study in Australia, and you can bring family members.
  • You must find your own employment – the visa is not employer-sponsored.
  • Check your work conditions in VEVO, the government’s visa entitlement tool.
  • You are protected by Australian workplace law.

What comes after the 485 visa?

A 485 visa is a bridge, not a destination. Many graduates use the time to gain skilled work experience and prepare a permanent residence application. Read how long it takes in our guide to PR after a 485 visa, check your Australia PR points and explore the Australia work visa options.

Watch out

Do not leave the AFP check and health insurance until the last week. Both must be organised before you lodge the visa application, and a missing document can delay the whole application.

Documents checklist for a 485 application

  • Passport and your current visa details.
  • Your qualification and completion evidence from your Australian institution.
  • English test results meeting the minimum scores above.
  • Evidence of adequate health insurance for all applicants.
  • Proof that you applied for an AFP (police) check in the allowed 12-month window, for everyone aged 16 or over.

Step-by-step: how to apply

  1. Choose your stream – you cannot change it after you apply.
  2. Book your English test and, if needed, an IELTS One Skill Retake before you lodge.
  3. Arrange health insurance and apply for your AFP check (not on the same day as the visa application).
  4. Lodge the application online while you are in Australia and while you hold an eligible visa.
  5. Keep your visa conditions in mind and check them in VEVO after the grant.

Common 485 mistakes

  • Waiting too long: you must have held a student visa in the last 6 months.
  • Choosing the wrong stream for your qualification.
  • Submitting an English result below the minimum, or from a test that does not meet the rules.
  • Applying for the AFP check on the same day as the visa application, or more than 12 months earlier.
  • Forgetting that you must be in Australia when you apply for the Post-Higher Education Work stream.

If you are studying in Australia now: plan your 485 from day one

  1. Choose a CRICOS-registered course at an Australian institution – the 485 needs a recent qualification from one.
  2. Know your stream. A degree leads to the Post-Higher Education Work stream; a diploma, associate degree or trade qualification leads to the Post-Vocational Education Work stream.
  3. Watch your age. The visa has an age limit of 35 at the time you apply (exceptions apply).
  4. Time your English test. The scores above apply to tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, and an IELTS One Skill Retake must be finished before you lodge.
  5. Keep your visa status in order – you must have held a student visa in the last 6 months when you apply.
  6. Budget for the visa charge (from AUD 5,750), health insurance and the AFP check.

Pro tip

For Indian graduates, the AI-ECTA stay lengths can be worth planning around: a STEM bachelor degree with first-class honours, a master’s or a PhD can earn a longer stay than the standard rules – so the level of your degree matters.
