Why Ireland, specifically

Ireland is the only English-speaking common law country remaining in the European Union, which is the whole argument in one sentence. For Indian professionals it means an EU base without a language barrier, and for employers it is why so many technology, pharmaceutical and financial multinationals run their European operations from Dublin, Cork and Galway.

The routes into Ireland

The Critical Skills permit, which is the one to aim for

This is the strongest route Ireland offers and it is worth understanding why. It carries no labour market test where the occupation is on the critical skills list, the spouse can usually work without their own permit, and it leads to long-term residence faster than the general permit. What it requires is an offer meeting the salary threshold for that list, from an employer registered with the Irish authorities. The occupation lists are revised, so the first thing to check is whether yours is on the current one.

What an Irish application asks for

  • The employment permit first, applied for by you or the employer, before the visa itself.
  • Evidence of qualifications, with recognition where the profession is regulated.
  • Funds for the initial period, in your own name.
  • Private medical insurance, required for students and for some permissions.
  • Registration with immigration after arrival, within the permitted period – a condition of the permission, not a formality.

Studying in Ireland as a route

For applicants who do not yet have an offer, study is the realistic way in: an Irish qualification, then the Third Level Graduate Programme, then an employment permit. The condition that matters is tuition – for most programmes Ireland requires the fee to be paid in full before the visa application, which changes the cash flow of the whole plan. Our study in Ireland service covers that route in detail.

What the move costs, and what it does not

Ireland is not a cheap country to live in, and Dublin in particular is expensive. What it does not have is a large up-front immigration charge, which changes the arithmetic at the point of applying.

ItemWho paysWhen
Employment permit feeEmployer or applicant, by arrangementBefore the visa application
Entry visa feeYouWith the visa application
Immigration registrationYouAfter arrival, on registering
Private medical insuranceYouBefore travel, for students and some permissions
Tuition, on the study routeYouIn full, before the visa application for most programmes
Our professional feeYouStaged, separate from every charge above

Cost of living varies sharply by city. Cork, Galway and Limerick are materially cheaper than Dublin, and several of the large employers have offices in all of them – which is worth factoring in before accepting the first offer that arrives.

Bringing your family

This is where the Critical Skills permit separates itself most clearly. Holders can generally bring a spouse or partner and dependent children, and the spouse can usually work without obtaining a permit of their own – which for a two-income household changes the calculation entirely. General Employment Permit holders face a longer wait before family reunification and a different position on spousal work rights. If family is part of the plan, this difference is worth more than the salary gap between two offers.

Ireland against the UK, for an Indian professional

These two are almost always compared, and the answer turns on which factor binds you rather than on which country is better.

IrelandUK
EU accessYesNo

Spouse work rightsUsually automatic on Critical SkillsPermitted for Skilled Worker dependants

Up-front health chargeNo equivalentImmigration Health Surcharge, paid in full at application

The absence of an up-front health surcharge makes Ireland materially cheaper at the point of application, particularly for a family. The UK offers a far wider choice of institutions and employers. Neither answer is universal – it depends which of those two matters more to you.

Where Irish applications go wrong

  • Applying for the visa before the employment permit. The permit comes first; the visa follows it, and the order cannot be reversed.
  • Assuming an occupation is on the critical skills list when the list has since been revised. Check the current version, not an article about it.
  • Underestimating the tuition rule on the study route, where the full fee is generally payable before the visa application rather than on arrival.
  • Missing the registration deadline after arrival, which is a condition of the permission and not an administrative formality.
  • Insurance that does not meet the requirement, or that starts on the application date rather than the date of entry.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a job offer to move to Ireland?

For the employment permit routes, yes. Ireland does not run a job seeker visa comparable to Germany or Portugal, so the alternative entry route is study.

Can my spouse work in Ireland?

Spouses and partners of Critical Skills Employment Permit holders can generally work without obtaining a separate permit. The position differs for General Employment Permit holders.

How long until permanent residence?

Long-term residence follows a qualifying period of lawful residence, and Critical Skills holders reach it sooner than General Permit holders. Citizenship requires a further period after that.

What we do, and what we will not claim

  • We check whether your occupation is on the current critical skills list before anything else.
  • We prepare the permit application and the visa that follows it.
  • We tell you when the answer is no, or not yet.
  • We do not guarantee outcomes, and we do not find you the job offer. The decision belongs to the Irish authorities.
