The formal name is indefinite leave to remain. “UK PR” is the term people search for, but it is not what the Home Office calls it, and the distinction matters when you are reading official guidance.
How long it takes to qualify
Most routes require a continuous qualifying period of lawful residence before you can apply, and the length depends on which visa you held. Continuity is the part people lose: absences above the permitted limit in any twelve-month period break the clock, and time spent on a visa that does not count toward settlement does not accrue at all. Check which of your visas were qualifying before you count the years.

Excess absences. The limit is per rolling twelve months, not averaged across the whole period.
A gap in lawful status, however brief, which usually resets the clock entirely.
Failing the Life in the UK test or not meeting the English requirement at the required level.
Unspent criminal convictions, which are assessed against the good character requirement.

Indefinite leave to remain against citizenship
Settlement is not the end of the process for everyone. Indefinite leave can lapse if you spend long enough outside the UK, and it does not carry a British passport or the right to vote. Naturalisation removes both of those limits, but it requires a further qualifying period after settlement and, for most applicants, a further set of residence conditions. Whether it is worth pursuing depends mainly on how much time you expect to spend abroad.
