Whether you’re planning to pursue a bachelor’s, master’s or other higher education in the UK, understanding the visa timeline is one of the most critical parts of your journey. Timing your application correctly can save stress, money, and last-minute hassles.
Once you’ve filled in your online visa application (UK Student route) and paid the fees:
Identity Verification:
You must confirm your identity either by attending a biometric appointment at a visa application centre or using the UK Immigration: ID Check app in some regions.
Biometric & Documents Submission:
At the appointment you’ll:
Give fingerprints & photo (biometrics).
Submit your passport.
Provide required supporting documents (financial evidence, CAS, TB test if applicable).
Start of Processing Time:
The official processing countdown usually begins after you submit your biometrics and passport, not the moment you finish the online form.
🌍 Standard timeline:
✔️ Most student visa decisions come within about 3 weeks (15 working days) after biometrics submission.
📌 Indian students — specifically — typically see decisions in 15–21 days, though peak seasons can extend this.
👉 “Working days” refers to UK business days — so weekends and UK bank holidays don’t count.
🇬🇧 If you’re already in the UK (e.g., switching or extending your current visa), processing timelines are longer:
✔️ Around 8 weeks on the standard service.
If you’re in a rush, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) sometimes offers premium services (availability depends on your local Visa Centre):
| Service Type | Decision Time |
|---|---|
| Priority | Within ~5 working days |
| Super Priority | Next working day |
⚠️ These come with extra fees and aren’t offered everywhere. Verify with your local VAC.
You can apply up to 6 months before your course begins if applying from outside the UK.
Early application is especially crucial if you’re targeting September intakes (peak season).
Summer months (May–September), especially before major intake intakes, see higher volumes, potentially stretching processing beyond the standard 15 days.
If your application is missing information or requires additional checks/interviews, your processing time may extend beyond the normal window.
Once approved:
✅ Your passport with visa vignette (if outside UK)
✅ Or online eVisa status (linked to your UKVI account)
👉 You’ll use this to travel and enter the UK.
Within 10 days of arrival, you may need to collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), which shows your immigration status in the UK.
| Step | Time Taken |
|---|---|
| Submit online + book biometrics | Immediate (depends on appointment slots) |
| Standard decision (outside UK) | ~3 weeks (15 working days) |
| Standard decision (inside UK) | ~8 weeks |
| Priority service | ~5 working days |
| Super priority | ~1 working day |
✔️ Apply early — ideally 6 months before your course.
✔️ Book biometrics ASAP after application.
✔️ Keep finances and CAS ready to avoid last-minute delays.
✔️ Track your application through email/SMS alerts from VAC.
